Business Computer Programming is a Business
Technology Education job-preparatory program designed to prepare
students for employment as File Clerk, General Office Clerk,
Computer Programmer Aide, and Junior Programmer. This program
focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understating and
demonstration of the following elements of the computer programming
industry: planning; management; finance; technical and production
skills; underlying principles of technology; labor issues; community
issues; and health, safety, and environmental issues.
The current programming language being offered
at PBHS is Visual Basic .NET. Visual Basic is the language of the
Windows operating system and it is the programming language of over 75%
of business application development. VB. Net is the latest version
of Microsoft's Visual Basic language, designed to run within the
.Net framework. The .NET Framework is a new programming model
designed to simplify application development in the highly
distributed environment of the Internet. Software running on the
.NET Framework can communicate with software running anywhere else
through SOAP and can use standard objects locally or distributed
across the Internet.
Students who earn a minimum of three credits
in the COMPUTER PROGRAMMING program and meet all eligibility
criteria may qualify for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars
Award. Listed below are the courses included in this program. For
Gold Seal purposes, students must earn credit in the two Business
Core courses plus at lease one specialization course.

This program is designed to prepare students
for employment as a File Clerk; General Office Clerk, Computer
Programmer Aide, and Junior Programmer.
This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills expanding
the traditional role of the Junior Programmer. The content includes
converting problems into detailed plans; writing code into computer
language; testing, monitoring, debugging, documenting, and maintaining
computer programs; and designing programs for specific uses and machines.
Most programs taught in these courses are strictly real world business
related pragrams.

This program is a planned sequence of
instruction consisting of the Business Technology Education Core
(Business Systems and Technology 1 - OCP A and Business Systems and
Technology 2 - OCP B) and two additional occupational completion
points. A student who completes the applicable competencies at
any occupational completion point may either continue with the
training program or exit as an occupational completer. In
order to have a magnet diploma for Information Technology, students
must take Business Systems and Technology I and take two consecutive
Computer Programming courses (Programming I and Programming II)
Business Systems and Technology I Length of course: 150 hours (1 credit) Course number: 8209020
This course is designed to provide a basic overview of current
business, information systems, trends, introduces
students to the basics and foundations required for today's business
environments. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency with
touch keyboarding and fundamental computer applications so that
they may be used as communication tools for enhancing personal and
workplace proficiency in an information-based society. This also
includes proficiency with computers using databases, spreadsheets,
presentation applications, and the integration of these programs
using software that meets industry standards.
Business Computer
Programming I Length of course: 150 hours (1 credit) Course number: 8206010 Prerequisites: Business Systems and Technology 1
This course introduces computer programming concepts for business
applications. The content includes basic information processing and
computer functions; operating systems, environments, and hardware
platforms; programming techniques and concepts; and basic financial
business concepts.
PBHS provides the latest technology tools to teach Information
Technology. Currently the latest version of Microsoft Operating
System (Windows XP Professional) and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
are being used as a software tool to teach Business Computer
Programming.
Business Computer
Programming II Length of Course: 150 hours (1 credit) Course Number: 8206020 Prerequisites: Business Systems and Technology I and
Programming I
This course continues the study of computer programming concepts for
business applications. The content includes information processing
and computer functions; operating systems; programming techniques
and concepts for sequential, indexed sequential, random, and direct
files; and the integrated nature of corporate systems. In addition
students will be introduced to database programming and design
programs that uses databases.

Programming III (Honors) Length of Course: 150 hours (1 credit) Course Number: 8206030 Prerequisites: Programming I and Programming II
This course continues the study of computer programming concepts for
business applications. The content includes interfaces for Systems
integration, software quality assurance, and advanced programming
techniques and concepts. Students will continue to expand the
knowledge that they have gained in previous programming courses and
will work with local business companies to design custom programs to
increase efficiency of the company.
Laboratory activities are an integral part of
this program and may include the use of keyboarding systems; data
entry devices; local area networks; and microcomputer, midrange, and
mainframe computer systems. The Student Computer Labs strive to
enhance the learning experience for all currently enrolled students
through innovative and effective use of technology. Pompano Beach
High School is always providing the latest hardware and the software
computer technology as an educational tool.
